Emma Smith was my husband’s maternal grandmother and mother of Annie Leach.
She was born on 15th August 1883 in Salford, Lancs to Charles and Annie.
On 1st January 1910 she married John Hazzleden Patrice in Manchester. John was her mother’s lodger and had been born in the West Indies.
The 1911 census shows Emma, John and their 4 month old son, James, living at 16 Wragby Street, Manchester. They had boarders who were Herbert Leach and Matilda Heald.

Their son James died of measles in 1913. They had a daughter, Hilda, in 1914. John died of pneumonia in 1915.
Emma married Herbert Leach on 14th June 1919 at Christ Church , Harpurhey after his first wife, Matilda had died.
Emma and Herbert went on to have 5 daughters together, including my mother-in-law, Annie.

Until about 1948 the family of ten lived at 38 Pickston Street, Harpurhey, Manchester, which was a terraced two-up, two-down.
They moved to a bigger house with an indoor bathroom once all the children were working.
Emma died in May 1974 at the age of 90.
