Charles Smith was my husband’s gt grandfather and the father of Emma Smith.
Not surprisingly, given his name, I do not have many concrete facts about Charles except that his parents were John and Mary Ann.
The 1881 and 1891 censuses give his birth date as around 1849 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.
I cannot find a record of him marrying Annie in around 1877. Annie Clarkson had married a John Yates Smith in 1863 and he died in 1876. Annie and Charles’ first child was born in 1878. As they were both now Smiths maybe they didn’t marry?
The family were living at 38 Duke street, Newton, Lancashire at the time of the 1881 census. By 1891 they had moved to James Street, Collyhurst, Lancashire. Charles’ occupation is given as Bricksetter. He is later described as a railway plate layer on the marriage certificate of his daughter, Emma.
Charles died before the 1901 census.
