Richard Hartley Porter 1830-1915

Richard Hartley Porter was my Gt Gt Grandfather and Father of Henry Porter.

St Margaret, Barking

He was born on 2nd August 1830 in Barking, Essex to Richard and Rebecca Porter.

He was living in Barking with his parents at the time of the 1841 census and with the local Blacksmith as his apprentice in the 1851 census.

He married Frances Creasey (known as Fanny) on 22nd January 1860 and they had 10 children, five of whom had died by the time of the 1911 census.

The 1861 census has the family living at 51 Regent Court, Barking, only a few doors along from his parents. Richard is a Blacksmith.

In 1871 the census shows Richard living as a lodger with another Blacksmith in Ordnance Road, Nelson, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He is probably there for the work.

The 1881 census has him back with his family. They have moved to Billet Cottages, Stanford le Hope.

They are back in Barking by the time of the 1891 census and living at 52 Hart Street. Richard is still a Blacksmith at the age of 60.

Ten years later Richard is still working at the forge. He and Fanny are living at 79 Fisher Street, Barking with their youngest daughter, Minnie.

By the age of 80 Richard is finally a pensioner. The 1911 census show that he and Fanny have moved in with their daughter, Minnie and her son at 105 Morley Road, Barking.

He died 5 years later at the age of 85 in Barking.
