Henry was my Great Grandfather and Father of Henry Porter.
He was born in Gorleston, Suffolk on 1st June 1870 to Richard and Frances. He was one of ten children, 5 of whom had died before the 1911 census.
By 1881 the family had moved to Stanford Le Hope in Essex. Henry’s father was a blacksmith and so they probably move for work.
The 1891 census shows them back at home in Barking, Essex, where his father was born.
On Christmas Day 1900 Henry married Mary Ann Elizabeth Stone at the Parish Church of St Margaret’s in Barking.
By 1911 the family have 3 sons and are living at 56 Cranbourne Road, Barking. Henry’s occupation is noted as Rubber Cutter – there was a large Rubber Works in Barking at the time.
Henry is living at 57 Kennedy Road Barking in 1915, when he enlisted in the Royal Army Supply Corps as a loader on 10th April 1915. He was Private no T4/096045 and trained at Aldershot.
He was with the 30th Div supply column on the “St Petersburg” which travelled from Southampton to Rouen on 30/8/15. He was in 261 Motorised Transport Company in France. He was awarded a Good Conduct Badge on 10/4/17 and discharged in 1919 with Rheumatism.
The family are still living at 57 Kennedy Road in 1939 and Henry is retired from his labouring job.
He died on 30th October 1961, aged 86, in St George’s hospital, Hornchurch and was buried at Rippleside Cemetery, Barking on 6th November (Grave ref: R/S/K/969)
