James Slipper was my Great Great Grandfather and the father of Albert Slipper.
He was born on 5th November 1839 in Ormond Yard, St Pancras, Middlesex (which is now Central London) to James and Margaret.
He was baptised on 1st December 1839 in St Pancras Old Church.
The 1841 census finds James, his parents and 2 older brothers (the eldest had died age 3 in 1836) living in Church Street, Hackney. By 1851 James had a younger sister, but his father had died in 1848 when James was 9. I have not yet found him in the 1861 census. On 11th April 1870 James married Matilda Moss in St. Edwards Church, Romford, Essex. The 1871 census shows James and Matilda living at 5 Queen Street, Romford. James’ occupation is given as signalman. By 1881 the family has 3 children (2 others had died in infancy), including my great grandfather, Albert, living at 3 Goole Cottages, Queen Street, Romford.
James is now a Brewer’s labourer. The Romford Star Brewery was a big local employer from 1708 until it’s closure in 1993. It was part of the Ind Coope company and produced John Bull Bitter. The Brewery had it’s own railway sidings and it is possible that it is here that James was a signalman. The 1891 census shows James, Matilda and 5 children living at 2 Willow Terrace, Willow Street, Romford. James is still a labourer at the Brewery. By 1901 James has fallen ill and he is listed on the census as an inmate of the Romford Union Workhouse and Infirmary in Oldchurch Road, Romford where he died on 28th April 1902.
