George Edward Mundy was my Great Uncle, older brother of my maternal grandmother, Clara.
He was born on 8th June 1898 in Barking, Essex and was baptised on 10th July. He was named George Edward Bradshaw with only his mother, Harriet Bradshaw, named on the records. Harriet married George William Mundy in 1899.
George carries the surname Mundy in the 1901 and 1911 census and was living with his family in Grove Place, Barking, Essex.
George was one of the original volunteers to join the 13th Battalion Essex Regiment (West Ham Pals) in 1914 – Service number 17368 :
Formed at West Ham on 27 December 1914 by the Mayor and Borough. Moved to Brentwood in May 1915. August 1915 : moved to Clipstone Camp and came under orders of 100th Brigade in 33rd Division. 17 November 1915 : landed at Boulogne. 22 December 1915 : transferred to 6th Brigade in 2nd Division. 10 February 1918 : disbanded in France because of lack of numbers.
George was transferred to the 10th Battalion Essex Regiment. (Part of the 53rd Brigade of the 18th Eastern Division)
George died on 22nd August 1918. This was during the 3rd Battle of Albert and the 2nd Battle of Bapaume. His body was buried to the East of Bernafay Wood as the cemetery was in enemy hands until recaptured later that month.
George was reburied in 1919 in Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban (10 km east of Albert) – Reference: I. 4.
We visited the cemetery to pay our respects in 2015 and returned with my mother to visit her uncle’s grave on the centenary of his death 22nd August 2018.
