I remember my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth, as a bedridden old lady when we visited in the late 1960s.
Elizabeth was born to John and Louisa on 21st November 1876 in Shadwell, Middlesex. She was baptised just over a week later at St James, Butcher Row, Ratcliff, Middlesex.
She lived with her parents and eight siblings in the East End of London until her marriage to Albert Bates on 16th June 1900, at the age of 23, at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney Parish Church.
The 1901 census shows Albert and Elizabeth living at 55 Lansdowne Road, Leytonstone, having moved out of the East End to Essex.
By the time of the 1911 census, Albert and Elizabeth had three living children, one of whom was my paternal grandfather, Leonard Bates. The family was now living at 177 Henley Road, Ilford, Essex.
The 1911 census also showed that one of Elizabeth’s children had died (Albert James Bates, the firstborn, was born and died in 1902)
Elizabeth and Albert went on to have 2 more children and the youngest is living with them in Bath, Somerset at the outbreak of the Second World War.
The family moved back to Ilford, Essex where Elizabeth was widowed in 1949. She lived until the age of 93 and died on 3rd November 1970.
