Charles Pearce Pitt 1839-1909

Charles was my husband’s Great Grandfather and the father of Albert Pitt.

The middle name Pearce was his maternal grandmother's maiden surname.

He was born on 4th December 1839 in Shottesham All Saints, Henstead, Norfolk. His parents were Robert and Maria. I have records of his 4 younger siblings, Sarah, Maria, Robert and William.

The 1841 census shows the family living in Norfolk, but by the 1851 census Charles has moved to London.  At the age of 12 he is an errand boy in St Pancras.

On 13th June 1858, at the age of 19, he married Sophia Mary Hewlett in Greenwich and the 1861 census shows them living  at High Street, Shadwell.  Charles is a Car Man and Oil Refiner.

Charles and  Sophia had 2 daughters and Sophia died in 1865.

On 29th August 1865, Charles married Mary Anne Wren at Holy Trinity, Brompton, Middlesex.

Charles and Mary Anne had 7 children, including Albert.

In 1871 they were living at 35 Brooke Street, Holborn and Charles is a Beer House Keeper.

Charles is a Cab Proprietor living at 6 Ducking Pond Mews, Mayfair on the 1881 census and is at the same address in 1884.

By 1891 the family had moved to Soham in Cambridgeshire and Charles was the Landlord of the Crown Inn, Churchgate Street.

Charles had retired by 1901 and was living at 36 Hills Road, Cambridge.  Mary Anne died that year.

Charles died on 24th February 1909, aged 69, at the Willesden Workhouse Infirmary, Acton Lane of Old Age, Bronchitis and Bronchiectasis.

Charles was buried in Fordham Road Cemetery, Soham, Cambs on 3rd March 1909 in plot A214 (Anglican burial). Mary Ann had been buried in the same grave on 6th March 1901. The graves were purchased by Charles on 4th March 1901 at a cost of £1.5s. Described as a common grave, the first burial was 9ft 6in deep. Charles died in Hendon and his body was brought back to Soham to be buried with Mary Ann. No gravestone survives.

We visited Soham in 2018 and photographed The Crown Hotel, which closed in 1967 and is now private houses.
