Alfred Bones 1854-1928

Alfred was my 3x great uncle, older brother of my great great grandmother Eliza (who married George Mundy)

He was born in Barking, Essex in 1854 and was baptised at St Margaret's on 3rd September.

His father, Edward, was an agricultural labourer and moved with the work. By the 1871 census the family had moved from Barking to Woolwich.

At the age of 16 Alfred was a labourer and was probably looking for a more interesting life.

So on 27th April 1876 he signed up to the Royal Marines as a gunner.

The 1881 census lists him as one of the ship's company of HMS Thunderer, which was one of two Devastation-class ironclad turret ships built for the Royal Navy in the 1870s.

Alfred married Eliza Miles in Portsmouth in 1884. By 1891 the family had moved back to Barking and Alfred was now a coal dealer. The 1911 census gives their address as 193 North Street, Barking, Essex.

Alfred died in Barking in 1928.
