Albert Edward Hunwick 1883-1916

Albert Edward Hunwick was my 1st cousin 3 x removed.


Aveley War Memorial

Albert was born on 14 Aug 1883 in Coggeshall, Essex and spent his childhood in Aveley, Essex, where his father was an Agricultural Labourer.

He married Rebecca Suttling in 1903. The family continued to live in Aveley where Albert worked as a general labourer. By 1911 they had had 4 children, 3 of whom were still living.

Albert was a Private in the Buffs (East Kent) Regiment 6th (service) Battalion (G/7729) .

He arrived in France on 2nd December 1915. On the 19th of January the  Battalion began a period of training in Open Warfare at Busnes, then moved back into the front line at Loos on the 12th of February 1916. In June they moved to Flesselles and carried out a training exercise. They moved to Baizieux on the 30th June and went into the reserve at Hencourt and Millencourt by mid morning on the 1st of July. They relieved the 8th Division at Ovillers-la-Boisselle that night and attacked at 3.15 the following morning with mixed success. Albert died of wounds on 3rd July 1916.


He is buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. (Grave ref. F36)
